Prof.GaryCarvalhoundertakesresearchonthemoleculargeneticanalysisofpopulationandspeciesbiodiversityofaquaticanimals,withstudiesaimedatunderstandingtheevolutionaryandecologicalforcesthatshapegeneticstructureinthewild,andhowsuchstructuremayinfluenceadaptation,populationpersistenceanddistribution.RecentworkhasfocusedontheuseofancientDNAtoexploreresponsesinrelationtolong-termenvironmentalchange,DNAbarcodingofmarinefishes,speciationinoffshoreLakeMalawicichlidsandthequantitativegeneticsofadaptivevariation.Recentfirst-timeresearchachievementsinclude:(i)aPCR-basedcomparativeanalysisofrestingeggbankandcontemporarypopulationsofzooplanktoncontestingclassicalmodelsontheextentandmaintenanceofgeneticdiversityincyclicparthenogens;(ii)theprovisionofestimatesofpopulationstructuringandthefirstcomprehensivephylogenyofLakeMalawicichlidfishesshowingevidenceforsympatricspeciation;(iii)empiricaldemonstrationthatlossofgeneticvariabilityisassociatedwithover-fishinginamarinefish.
