The Engaged University: Re-defining Academic Priorities in Colleges of Agriculture and Forestry

Abstract: The United States and China have invested heavily to develop a national system of universities and colleges that are the envy of the world. Higher education in both countries has an illustrious history of contributing to economic and social progress nationally and internationally. However, in the United States, there is rising public concern about the responsiveness of our public universities to the pressing economic, social, and environmental problems faced by our urban and rural communities. This paper reports on the outcomes of a national Kellogg Commission recommending to return public universities to “engaged” institutions that have, “redesigned their teaching, research, and service functions to become more sympathetically and productively involved with their communities.” The paper proceeds to describe a number of experimental community engagement programs within our Davis College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Consumer Sciences at West Virginia University. These engagement programs include a Community Design Team, the Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program, professional internships, and service learning programs. The scholarship of engagement challenges us as university faculty to embrace an expanded view of scholarship—one that sees scholarship within the frame of searching for answers to the most pressing social, civic, economic, and moral problems of the day.
